Chapter 9

Harper came home to find the house dark and empty. Straight away a cold sweat ran down his back. Where was she? Had something happened? Quickly he unlocked and went to the place where they left messages. If she had needed to go to the hospital, she would have left a message. Pulling out his phone he checked it was on and she had not called. After the earlier problems, he had been constantly checking it. But had come to the conclusion that Catherine had been turning it off. She was gone now, but where was Kay?

Running outside he checked the garage, her BMW was missing. Anger spiked through him for just a moment. He had warned her about driving in her condition and especially as the road was still slippery after it rained. His musing was cut short when his phone burst into life.

“Kay,” he answered, but it was not her. The words down the handset almost stopped his heart.

“Mr. Nelson I’m calling from the emergency room. I’m sorry you wife has been in an accident.” Harper never heard the rest, but he put it together as he drove across town. Kay had been in a serious accident and was now at the hospital in a critical condition. As he rushed to be at her side, he prayed to God, “Lord, please let my wife and son be Ok.”

He pulled the Jaguar into the emergency drop-off point and leaving the keys raced into the hospital. Someone was shouting, but he did not stop. They could move the car, hell they could steal the car for all he cared. The hospital was busy and he raced to the reception.

“My wife, where’s my wife,” he asked.

A calm, elderly woman stared up at him and her face immediately took on a look of sympathy. “No,” he almost screamed. “No, please no.”

“What is your wife’s name,” the woman asked.

“Akanke Nelson,” he managed.

The woman checked her screen and nodded. “Do not worry Mr. Nelson we will get the Doctor to come to you as soon as he is free.”

“Can I see her?” Harper asked.

“Not at the moment,” she said. “Understand the Doctor is better caring for your wife and as soon as he knows anything he will come and see you. Please take a seat over there.”

She pointed to the emergency waiting area and Harper felt as if the world had stopped. Somehow he found himself sat on a chair along with a few other people who looked as if their world had also ended. Not knowing what to do he closed his eyes and prayed. The thought of Akanke’s pastor came to mind and he could almost hear the man’s clear and calm voice. He held onto that voice and offered all he had to the Lord to keep Kay safe. Right, then he hoped his son lived too, but Kay mattered more. The company was forgotten, the will and all his father’s billions were meaningless if he didn’t have Kay. Please, Lord, take me,” he whispered.
